MALCOLM RAINS's ART

Rains' work has been exhibited extensively throughout notable institutions across Canada including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Winnipeg Art Gallery, The Power Plant (Toronto) and the Art Gallery of Hamilton. His work, which ranges from austere still life studies against a black abyss to complete abstraction, has its roots in classical Greek art, architecture and mythology. Classical characteristics such as harmony, proportion, and order are often challenged by Rains' embrace of randomness and chance and the creation of a new definition of beautiful. Rains' execution of chiaroscuro resonates in striking tonal contrasts that can be seen with each fold of paper in his "Classical Series" paintings.
